Kirby is the protagonist of the Kirby franchise, which has been running strong for thirty years. He is the hero of Dream Land and will stop at nothing to save and protect it and his home planet. During the early development of Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby went by the name Twinkle Popopo.

Like most members of his species, he has the ability to inhale and swallow foes, and copy their abilities, expanding his powers in ways that are difficult to predict. He can hover by taking in air and puffing up like a balloon, but can otherwise use a Warp Star to travel to places.

He also has his own range of adaptations outside of video games, from his very own anime to several book series, both manga and light novel, and has had a great deal of merchandise over the past years.

Physical Appearance[]

In terms of his characteristics, Kirby is prominently well known for his simplistic-looking design, having a pink spherical body with two stubby arms and two red feet. He has pink cheek blushes (depicted as whiskers or diagonal lines in early installments) and two black oval-shaped eyes, with a white shine at the top and blue irises covering the lower portion of it. Outside of a few minor instances, Kirby does not appear to have a form of skeletal structure nor teeth.

Personality[]

Kirby is a heroic child who will go to great lengths to protect his home and friends, and even help other characters in a problem. Sometimes impulsive, which can lead to more trouble, but overall good at heart as he barely has harbor dislike for anybody. He is usually known to be rather silent as he does not speak audibly, but uses lots of grunts, shouts, and monosyllables in his vocabulary.

In canon[]

Kirby first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land for the Game Boy to retrieve all of Dream Land's stolen food from King Dedede. He could not copy abilities in his debut, though. He does acquire his signature Copy Ability power in the next game, Kirby's Adventure. Later on, in Kirby's Dream Land 2 and 3, new animal friends who could enhance Kirby's Copy Abilities were introduced, Combo Abilities introduced in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, as well as Mix Abilities in Kirby: Squeak Squad and Kirby Star Allies.

In fanon[]

Kirby's Dream Land (TV series) (1993-95)[]

Kirby serves as the main protagonist of the 90s cartoon series, fulfilling his usual role in the games. He was voiced for the first two seasons by Dana Hill, who uses a voice for him similar to her portrayal of Max Goof on the Disney animated series Goof Troop. Candace Cameron Bure from the live-action sitcom Full House took over the role beginning with the first episode of the third season, and also makes a recurring role as the 1993-95 Kirby in the Kirby’s Dream Land: Friends are Magic episode “Time Warpers”. His singing voice is provided by Tabitha St. Germain, and his S1-2 intro voice is provided by Jodi Benson.

In the sequel of the official anime, Kirby's role remains the same, albeit he has gained the title of Hero of Cappy Town thanks to the demise of NME. He also gains a bunch of new Abilities from Gala. Hyness addressed him as the Strongest Star Warrior of the Galaxy, but most likely he seemed to be actually referring to the Aeon Hero. Hyness believed that Kirby is the deformed phase of Void Termina, the reason why Nightmare feared him when the puffball betrayed the CEO wizard.

This is the only "fanime" where Kirby is seen talking, although he can only say "Poyo language" like before until the Final Battle against the Matter of the Most Dark.

Kirby: Tear in the Dimensions/Kirby: Tear in the Code (January 4, 2020)[]

After defeating Dark Meta Knight, Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight, Bandana Waddle Dee and Shadow Kirby (he agreed to help them fight Queen Sectonia) confront Queen Sectonia again.

Kirby: Time Travel Trouble[]

In this game, Kirby's Friend Heart ability upgrades to a new and even more powerful form, Strawberry Heart, and re-learns a classic power,Mix (aka Power Combo). He also learn more of his species and ancestors.

NZ9002's fanon (2021 Onward IRL)[]

In NZ9002's fanon for the franchise, Kirby can speak, but generally doesn't due to him not having much to say, though he has been speaking more and more recently. He is a direct descendant of Void, and the most powerful member of his species. Kirby harbors a somewhat rowdy fighting spirit, but otherwise is extremely nice and friendly. Dark Hyness Clone is his self-proclaimed Arch Enemy, something Kirby does not reciprocate.

After the introduction of Super V. State, Kirby is notably one of the few main characters who cannot achieve the state. Dark Hyness states that this is due to his pure heart disallowing him from feeling true rage or hatred towards anyone. In place of Super V. State, he instead summons the Star Sword of Hope, a fusion of the Star Rod and Rainbow Sword. Starting with Mario & Kirby: A New Dream Team, the Star Sword of Hope has been phased out in favor of Staraxia, with Super V. States in general only being mentioned. As a result of his pure heart, Kirby does not have the same hatred for Lacuna he has in EpicGreenKirby's fanon. That said though, he does have some disliking towards the Time Erasor.

In this fanon, Kirby is generally associated with Forgotten Land's arrangement of Green Greens, Welcome Home Kirby!.

EpicGreenKirby's fanon[]

In EpicGreenKirby's fanon, Kirby can speak English quite well. He is the positive reincarnation of Void while Zero is the negative reincarnation of Void. Kirby is very strong and kind. Dark Hyness and the Dark Mage-Sisters have a huge hatred for Kirby and despise him very much, even though Kirby hopes to be friends with them someday. However, the same cannot be said for Lacuna, Kirby outright hating her for the events caused in Last Goodbye, and later on, Fall of Allies, even contemplating destroying her soul when she returns in Turbulent Apocalypse. EpicGreenKirby's fanon is connected to Goatres's and NZ9002's fanon verses, but games from Kirby Star Allies 5 onwards are generally non-canon to NZ9002's fanon verse, with the exceptions of the Lacuna Trilogy.

Goatres's fanon[]

In Goatres's fanon, Kirby is known as the "Great Hero of Dream Land". He protects anyone from threats, even if it costs him something. He is able to speak English, but he'd rather not. However, he is never willing to kill any of his friends that are possessed, as shown by how he doesn't want to kill the Mage Sisters, who ware corrupted and merged into the Mage Wyvern. As shown in Kirby: Swordsman’s Fury, Kirby almost never talks in-game, unlike EpicGreenKirby’s Fanon’s version of Kirby, who talks a whole lot. This is because the Goatre’s Fanon Verse’s version of Kirby is normally very silent, like that of NZ’S Fanon.

In this fanon, Kirby is mainly associated with the Star Allies remix of “Four Adventurers: Cookie Country”.

JustLikeHeartia's fanon[]

In JustLikeHeartia's fanon, Kirby is a female and is actually older than her sister Keeby. She originally was four years old and was younger that her sister when her home planet Starlia exploded. Starlight City was safe thanks to her and Keeby's mom Kara researching Dark Matter's technology and using its findings to build a force-field around the city. Nonetheless, a Dark Matter android activated and started wrecking the city and killing everyone. Moments before the planet's demise, Kara put Kirby to sleep, placed her in a space pod, and blasted her into space, asking her to look after her sister if she finds her. Unfortunately, Kirby's space pod got stuck in a piece of a star and the pod's emergency systems placed her in suspended animation.

Thirteen years later, the pod, containing a now sixteen year old Kirby, crash lands on an unknown planet(Planet Popstar), where it is found by Bandana, Dedede and Meta. When Kirby awakened from her artificially-induced dream, she couldn't remember anything, including her own name. She also found out that her mother was dead, she was stranded in an alien world and that her sister Keeby has grown up. For all of these reasons she was confused and full of anger and grief for a while during which she struggled to adapt to her new life in Dream Land.

Kirby: The Truth of Destinies[]

Kirby, as Eclipse Termina, serves as the secondary antagonist and is the final boss of The Truth of Destinies.

Kirby: Far-Away Home Planet[]

In Kirby: Far-Away Home Planet, Kirby's personality and background is identical to the anime. He is described a young, little boy who loves sleeping a little too much. In this series, he doesn’t know how to speak to others and he doesn’t know how to think properly. The only lines of dialogue he presents are inaudible baby noises. He believes he can be everybody's friend, even with his past rivals. Kirby is shown to be very curious and his attention can be stolen quickly.

Kirby somehow feels a connection to a certain star in the sky. However, this has not been identified as to why yet.

Magolor's Return to Dream Land[]

In this game, Kirby (along with King Dedede, Meta Knight and Bandana Waddle Dee) are captured by Galacta Knight. A fake version of him, alongside the other 3 characters, are fought.

Kirby: Nightmare of Legend[]

Kirby: Heroes of Dream Land[]

Kirby is the main protagonist of this turn-based RPG. Notably, it is implied that this Kirby is the one from present day Popstar, who has somehow traveled back in time.

Kirby: Fall of Allies[]

As a result of Lacuna's time manipulating, nearly all of Kirby's allies think of him as a threat, specifically, Eclipse Termina. With only Galacta Knight, Keikai, and Striken as his allies, Kirby goes on a quest to free Popstar and defeat Lacuna once and for all. Eventually, Elfilin, Marx, Magolor, and Bandana Waddle Dee are reminded of the previous timeline, and join Kirby. However, he is also turned into Eclipse Termina in this game. Additionally, Kirby also gains a new form in Sun Kirby.

Kirby: Dark Revenge[]

In Kirby: Dark Revenge, Kirby is the main protagonist and goes around fighting Zero-Six's Moon Matter, which are all later defeated. After Zero-Six absorbs the orb containing all dark power in the universe, Zero-Six transforms into Blood Zero. Blood Zero overpowers Kirby and manages to kill all the Star Allies sans Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight and Bandana Waddle Dee. Kirby then gets angry and summons Omega Staraxia, which kills Blood Zero, but just before Blood Zero fully dies, he pulls Kirby into a mindscape. Chaos Zero then fights Kirby in the mindscape, but Kirby manages to destroy Zero's soul and Zero accepts his soul to rest. But Zero's Negative Thought give all the dark power in the universe to Kirby which turns Kirby into Dark Lord Kirby, the Infinite Lord of Darkness. This transformation is short lived, however, with King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee fighting the Dark Lord, and later Zero's Last Stand, with Kirby's soul fighting from the inside.

Trivia[]

Official[]

  • According to Kirby Fighters 2, Kirby is unable to read, as he is unable to read the letter Meta Knight and King Dedede send him as stated in the introduction to Story Mode: The Destined Rivals. However in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, he is presumably able to read the Present Codes around Waddle Dee Town while Elfilin isn't around - in addition he can write down the codes at Waddle Dee-liveries in Waddle Dee Town to get bonus items, though the Delivery Waddle Dee Gotcha Capsule states Kirby's handwriting makes it hard to read sometimes.
  • Kirby's simplistic appearance was originally a placeholder for a more detailed character, but Masahiro Sakurai and the developers came to prefer the simple design and stuck with it.
  • Numerous sources point out that Kirby has "good motor skills", with his Super Smash Bros. Melee trophy also describing him as "an extremely skilled technician", however the statement is likely a mistranslation.

Fanon[]

  • In KirbytheStar703's Fanon Verse, Kirby's backstory was that he was born a potential member of the Order of the Warriors, and he was raised by Princess Moonbright until the collapse of the planet Kudora. Kirby then arrived on a fraction of the planet (Planet Popstar) and using the Star Rod he had, he chased away the Dark Matter that the world was being invaded by.
    • Kirby is the most recent part of the Order of the Warriors (The Aether Kin), as the series implied.
    • In JustLikeHeartia’s fanonverse, where Kirby was a female, it was shown in her backstory that she was born as the leader of the six legendary Star Guardians(the other members being Katatrina, Kari, Kendra, Kevin and Kate), and that she was raised by her parents(who remain unnamed)until the collapse of the planet Galaxia. Kirby then crash-landed on an unfamiliar planet(which was Planet Popstar), and using her Destiny Powers, she chased away the Dark Matter that it was being invaded by. Her siblings soon travelled to Planet Popstar, and Kirby had an unexpected reunion with her long-lost siblings(Kirby of the Stars: Destiny Splash! S2 E9)
